How was my developement in Bodyboarding
| My complete name is Enrique A Sampayo Mendez , born in 1971 in the island of Puerto Rico. Located betwen the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. My first contact with a bodyboard was in 1983 in the town of Luquillo with a (morey135) board, on that day I just had fun slidding on the wild waters that touched the shore. Time passed and in less than a month I borrowed a board from a friend .With my father I started to visit more surf spots regularly, spots with little waves to ride the wild waters. Between 1984-85 I was in the bodyboard scene known as "El Sheraton " in the Condado area, actual Marriot Hotel, town of San Juan. It is here where I started to learn basic movements such as riding the top of the wave, cutting left and rigth, and sliding on to the barrrel.Time passed and I wanted to improve my skill levels, so I started taking the bus ride to "El Sheraton" spot, every weekend. It is in this bus ride where I met other skilled riders who inspired me to go to the next step and ride the next spot of "La Ocho". It is here at "La Ocho" where for the firs time I get to ride a wave with heihgt, a long distance wave with a reef bottom , it is on this day that I visualized that I would practice Bodyboarding for therest of my life. I started to visit other spots. In the town of Loiza, I surfed in "Aviones" and "Tocones ". My riding level started getting better and I started to practice riding on my knees (Drop Knee). During the years 1986-88 I started to visit "Los Tubos" surf spot in the town of Manati, here I developed and improved my posture riding bigger waves. This wave possessed a good surface. In this spot great channels form toget to the waves when a larger swell breaks in. I had the opportunity to travel to the island of Oahu Hawaii and surf the waves of "Pipeline", and in Mexico the waves of " Puerto Escondido". As the years have passed I still travel throughout the island of Puerto Rico's north coast, west coast and south east coast, looking to discover new spots,"new challenges" meeting new people, and experiences that last until the present. To share my experiences with the new generation , that is the purpose of my page. |
